Orion Support Services is proud to have achieved FORS Silver standard in the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme.

What is FORS?

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is an impartial, independent body set up to review fleet activities in London and the UK as a whole. Their aim is to help companies improve their transit operations (remaining lawful, safe and efficient) by carrying out periodic examinations to ensure standards are met.

The award reassures our customers of what they already know: our fleet is managed according to the highest standards of professionalism and industry best practice.

The FORS is a voluntary scheme for fleet operators to show that they are achieving a high standard. The aim of the FORS scheme is to raise the quality of fleet operations in the UK.

How did we achieve our accreditations?

In February 2016, Orion Support Services was re-issued a bronze accreditation following a thorough audit of our fleet. A year on and after meticulous analysis we were awarded the more prestigious silver. Not only were the fleet credited for their professionalism and management, but customers can now be assured that our vehicles are safer, greener and more efficient than ever.

To attain a FORS certification, an operator must meet certain requirements. These requirements fall into four categories:

  • Management
  • Vehicles
  • Drivers
  • Operations

We must ensure we meet all the requirements across these categories, undergoing regular audits, to attain the FORS standard certification. As a FORS standard operator, you can rest assured that Orion operates a safe, efficient and environmentally sound fleet.

As one of London’s waste carriers, we provide a valuable service to construction companies in the city. Many construction companies require their suppliers to be FORS accredited. We know being FORS accredited is important to our customers, so that’s why we opted to go one step further and apply for the Silver standard.

Before achieving the silver accreditation, the fleet had to perform well in a number of other areas:

FORS Silver Accreditation Requirements

On top of the basic requirements for the FORS Bronze standard, attaining the Silver standard includes:

  • Making sure vehicles are fitted with an audible warning system so that other road users are warned when our vehicles make a left turn
  • Minimising blind spots in our vehicles as much as possible
  • Have drivers undertake regular training on vulnerable road user safety
  • Monitoring and managing of fuel consumption and emissions output

Vehicle safety standards

A number of tests were carried out to make sure our vehicles measured up to the safety standard set by FORS. Silver standard demands all vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes are equipped with an audible warning for other road users to be aware they are about to turn left, therefore reducing the likelihood of a collision. The installation of large mirrors and other visual and audio aids has augmented the safety standards, ensuring all potential blind spots to the front, side and rear are minimised if not eliminated.

“Silver accreditation is awarded to operators who maintain their Bronze accreditation and can demonstrate that they have developed driver licensing verification systems, their vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are equipped with a left turn audible warning system and their vehicles are fitted with blind spot minimisation devices.”

Driver training

Another factor behind our company receiving this prestigious accreditation is the qualification of safe drivers. On top of the bronze requirements that each driver must carry their license, silver insists drivers undergo additional training on how to deal with other vulnerable road users.

Performance measurement

Silver accreditation also recognises our efforts to make our vehicles greener and more fuel-efficient. Recording the amount of fuel we use, and the costs of this along with records of our CO2 emissions, our competence in environmental change was revealed.

At Orion, it’s important to us to be the best we can be. As a waste carrier, we need to make sure what we do is safe, compliant and as environmentally friendly as possible. Having the FORS Silver standard certification shows that Orion’s fleet does just that.
