Safe Urban Driving with GBN
Over the last month, our drivers have been taking part in the Safe Urban Driving course, a driver safety course aimed at reducing the risks of driving in today’s busy urban environments.
The number of cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists on our roads is ever increasing. As a fleet operator based in London, safety of all road users is paramount. So that’s why all of our drivers are undertaking this course.
Cycling UK wants 5.7 million Brits cycling more by 2020 and with Bike Week coming up in June, we wanted to do our bit to help make the roads safer for cyclists.
What is the Safe Urban Driving Course?
The Safe Urban Driving course looks at how fleet operators share the roads with the most vulnerable road users, with a particular emphasis on cyclists. The course even includes practical ‘on-road’ cycle training, putting our drivers on bikes so they can see things from a cyclists perspective. Cyclist safety in London has been in the spotlight for a while, and as a FORS Silver accredited fleet, our vehicles have been fitted with extra safety devices designed to help protect cyclists.
We operate a fleet of skip trucks, wait and load vans and lorries, all of which are out on the roads of London every day. So it’s important our drivers are trained and equipped to operate safely. This month our drivers swapped their large vehicles for bicycles for a day and learnt about vulnerable road users, how to share the roads with such users, as well as things like defensive driving techniques, collision avoidance and effective use and maintenance of special vehicle safety equipment.
Here’s a group of our drivers out in Waltham Forest, getting ready to set off on their bicycles:
Safe Urban Driving: An Industry Requirement
The Safe Urban Driving course is now becoming a requirement for many industry initiatives across the UK such as the CLOCS and FORS recognition schemes. The course is delivered by Fleet Source, a Transport for London approved training supplier.
